When Women Come Together and Create NVSHU.. The Future for Creatives in China
“I can’t tell a woman who is growing up here how she should perceive her sexuality or her gender identity,” Akilla says. “That’s a form of colonization. You can only support people on their journey.”
Lhaga Koondhor (aka Asian Eyez), Amber Akilla, and Daliah Spiegel, founders of a new NVSHU, an all-female music collective founded in 2018 among the ever-expanding skylines of modern-day Shanghai.
NVSHU's founders consider themselves devoted feminists and allies, but their central aim is to facilitate empowerment through individual personal expression—itself a radical act. “We want to encourage people to explore their creativity,” Akilla says.
The goal of NVSHU, is to inspire those with music education and the understanding to apply an inclusive vision to Shanghai’s emerging nightlife scene. Which will create a unique space for people to explore their creative freedom. Shanghai’s nocturnal world still a relatively blank canvas ready for growth and exploration. It is up to them to inspire everyone around them.
